DIY Natural Deodorant using Essential OilsIn recent years, there has been a growing concern about the ingredients found in traditional deodorants and their potential impact on our health. Many commercial deodorants contain chemicals and additives that may be harmful to our bodies. Fortunately, you can take control of what you put on your skin by making your own natural deodorant at home. This DIY recipe combines the goodness of witch hazel, vitamin E, and essential oils like patchouli, tea tree, and lavender to create an effective and health-conscious alternative.

Ingredients:

  • Witch Hazel: Known for its astringent properties, witch hazel helps to control excess oil, reduce inflammation, and soothe the skin.
  • Vitamin E: A powerful antioxidant, vitamin E promotes skin health by neutralizing free radicals and supporting the skin’s natural regeneration process.
  • Patchouli Essential Oil: With its earthy and sweet aroma, patchouli essential oil not only adds a pleasant scent but also has antimicrobial properties that help fight odor-causing bacteria.
  • Tea Tree Essential Oil: Renowned for its antibacterial and antifungal properties, tea tree oil is effective in keeping bacteria at bay, preventing unpleasant odors.
  • Lavender Essential Oil: In addition to its calming and soothing scent, lavender essential oil has antibacterial properties, making it a great addition to a natural deodorant.

Benefits of Natural Deodorant:

  • Chemical-Free: Unlike commercial deodorants that often contain harmful chemicals like aluminum, parabens, and phthalates, this DIY recipe uses natural ingredients to keep your underarms fresh.
  • Odor Control: The combination of antibacterial essential oils helps control odor-causing bacteria, keeping you feeling confident throughout the day.
  • Skin-Friendly: Witch hazel and vitamin E provide a soothing and nourishing effect on the skin, making this natural deodorant suitable for those with sensitive skin.
  • Customizable Scents: You can tailor the scent to your liking by adjusting the essential oils that you use, ensuring a personalized and enjoyable experience. I have used Gentle Baby Essential Oil blend, Geranium Essential Oil and Joy Essential Oil blend.

Why commercial deodorants my not be healthy:

  • Chemical Concerns: Many commercial deodorants contain chemicals that may be absorbed through the skin, raising concerns about potential health risks.
  • Aluminum Content: Some deodorants contain aluminum compounds, which have been associated with health issues and are a subject of ongoing research.
  • Skin Irritation: Harsh chemicals and artificial fragrances in traditional deodorants can cause irritation, redness, and discomfort for individuals with sensitive skin.

Below is a link to purchase the essential oils and the AromaGlide® Roller Fitments used in this recipe. I also included the alternative product I use as a deodorant in a pinch.

I also included the natural deodorant options available with Young Living.

Tea Tree Essential Oil is derived from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia tree native to Australia.

During World War II Australian soldiers carried tea tree oil in their first aid kits as a topical treatment for wounds and infections. Today, tea tree essential oil is celebrated globally for its natural antibacterial and antifungal qualities, making it a versatile and valuable addition to skincare and health products.

Equipment

  • 1 15 ml glass bottle I repurposed a Progessence Plus clear glass bottle
  • 1 AromaGlide® Roller Fitment Transform your favorite Young Living® essential oils into convenient roll-on bottles with AromaGlide® Roller Fitments. Comes in pack of 10 fitments.
  • 1 funnel, small optional

Materials

  • 2 ounces Witch Hazel I prefer Thayer's Unscented, but any of the Thayer's Witch Hazels will work.
  • 2-4 drops Vitamin E I use liquid form, but you could pierce a vitamin E capsule and squeeze the vitamin E from the capsule.
  • 10 drops Patchouli Essential Oil
  • 10 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil
  • 10 drops Lavender Essential Oil

Instructions

  • Add essential oils and Vitamin E to glass bottle. Give a shake. You could allow it to sit for an hour to allow the essential oils and vitamin E to synergize.
  • Add the Witch Hazel to the glass bottle up to the shoulder area where the bottle curves to the neck. Do not overfill because you need room to add the roller fitment.
  • Add the fitment and cap.
